Kindergarten



Collin is enjoying kindergarten so much.  He was talking to Cy in the car yesterday and was telling him how we went to school all by himself.  He continued on by saying he felt like he was at home when he was there.  His classmates "are like his brothers and sisters" and his teacher is "kinda like mom".  The he said "but don't tell anyone"!!  So sweet.  I love that he loves it so much.

 

 

He gets a homework packet every Monday that is to be completed by Friday.  There are spelling words, reading assignments, writing assignments, handwriting pages and math worksheets.  Sometimes he has a poem he is to work on memorizing, and sometimes he has science or social studies facts he will be tested over.

 

His reading worksheets are in conjunction with an online reading program.  He loves it.  He can listen to the book, read the book and even record himself reading the book.  His teacher has access and can listen to his recordings!!  His book this week was called FROG IS HUNGRY.  I love that he is learning components of writing while learning to read and comprehend.  Comprehension is a huge part of reading/writing skills.

 

He has a test tomorrow over magnets.  We have been reviewing all week.  He has enjoyed this unit and telling us about the magnets he has seen in the classroom.

 

Spelling Words!!  They started spelling words this nine weeks.  This is his third list.  He has done wonderfully on them, so far.  He is also realizing that penmanship really matters - he missed one last week because his 'h' looked like an 'n' and his teacher counted it wrong.  We have been working on that letter h stem!!

 

Here is a math worksheet.  They work out of Saxon and are learning in the first grade book.  Our school operates on a philosophy of teaching a year ahead and places that bar high in kindergarten.  Saxon is cyclical in nature and builds on concepts through the year.  I love how they are learning ordinal patterns, geometrical shapes and word problems with addition in the same lesson!

 

He has a page of sight words to master each week, as well.  He reads them to us every night.

 

This is his writing page.  They are to write a sentence (or more) that tells WHO, WHAT and WHERE.  They have to address all three W's and draw a picture that matches what they write.  Collin's have become much more involved lately.  He is becoming quite the story teller.  This one is tame - talking about kids at the pool.  He came home this week with one he wrote in class that was about sharks and how they bit him in the ocean!

 

Todd and I are so proud of Collin and how well he is adjusting to being in 'big kid' school.  It can be such a transition for some kids.  Cole had a difficult time the first few weeks of his kindergarten year.  We are thankful to have kids who enjoy learning and have been so pleased with their school and amazing teachers.  We can't wait to see all the things Collin will do this year!
