Todd and I have been going to the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University at church this past few weeks and we have really been enjoying it. We are learning a lot about money and being better stewards of our money. We have been doing the cash thing for a while now and really have minor minor credit card debt and our two cars as part of our consumer debt. We cannot wait to get it all paid off!! One of his major teachings is to cut and cancel all of your credit cards. We were operating under the assumption that we needed to keep the credit cards open in order to keep our credit report in good standing. We had them all piled in a little fish bowl at home - not being used. Well - Dave Ramsey makes a point being - if you aren't going to be going into to debt anymore - why do you need credit cards (or even credit for that matter) So - we got all our cards out of the fish bowl, called each one and cancelled and then cut them all up - here is the end result ...

None of these credit cards had a balance (and there are duplicates because we each had a card issued in our name) but we totaled up our
potential debt on these cards and we could have charged
$57,500.00!!!! WHAT!!! Can you believe we had that much open credit in our names and really didn't even know it? GAG. The sad thing is that I am certain there are people out there that are
carrying that much credit card debt. scary. (and - I am not pointing fingers or casting judgement - it is just scary. we feel burdened with trying to payoff our silly doctor bills and can't imagine what the burden of that amount of debt would feel like)
Anyway - we will keep you posted on our journey to a debt free life - and we'll see how long it takes!
